19 June 2008 Speed camera nets 1,200 in three weeks

1,200 drivers caught out by camera. Some 1,200 motorists have been caught breaking the speed limit by a camera in an area of Lancashire over the last three weeks, it has been reported.

According to the Burnley and Pendle Citizen, this has seen drivers in the area pay £72,000 in fines, representative of a seven-fold increase for 2008 so far against the average recorded in previous years.

Motorists who find themselves on the receiving end of a driving conviction could have difficulty picking up cheap car insurance in the future.

This is because some cover firms may consider the drivers to be a risk on the road.

"If the cameras are catching such a large number of drivers then maybe the local Highways Agency needs to re-enforce the signage around the camera to warn about the reduction in the speed limit," said Claire Armstrong, co-founder of Safe Speed.

The Argus has commented that Sussex speeders are being offered the chance to take a £105 road safety awareness course instead of a ban.
