18 June 2008 Caravan wheels 'should be checked by drivers'

Check those tyres before heading away! Motorists who are towing caravans to holiday destinations this summer should make sure that the vehicles tyres are up to scratch, an industry body has claimed.

Tyre specialist Protyre has stated that nearly two million drivers in the UK opt against carrying out basic checks on their caravans before they set off.

As a result, it may be that motorists find that they invalidate their car insurance policies if they are involved in an accident.

Barry Norris, Camping and Caravanning Club technical information officer, remarked that the vehicles should be maintained throughout the year.

"Tyres are a major factor in caravan safety and the club encourages caravanners to check their tyres regularly and not to forget that age deterioration can be a real problem," said the official.

Recent research from Cooper Tyre Europe has found that £1 billion could be wasted by motorists not maintaining their tyres each year.
