17 June 2008 Checking tyre pressure 'could save on fuel costs'
Recent research has found that British motorists could make substantial savings on their fuel costs simply by checking the pressure on their tyres. Cooper Tire Europe found that around 95 per cent of vehicles on the road have one or more under-inflated tyres, which results in waste of over £1 billion a year in unnecessary fuel costs.
It is claimed that if tyres are not inflated properly petrol consumption can increase by up to 2.5 per cent.
Malcolm Jones, product manager for Cooper Tire, commented: "It's amazing that drivers arent bothering to do it, as it could save them money and, more importantly, keep them safe on the road.
Michelin have advised drivers that a drop in car tyre pressure could be caused by leaking in the tyre, drops in ambient temperature or small perforations in the tyre which could lead to long-term damage to the tyre if run while under-inflated.
