13 June 2008 Rogue instructor investigation gets underway

Driving instructors investigated in Bolton. Driving instructors taking to the road without the proper qualifications are the subject of a new investigation carried out by officials in Bolton, it has been reported.

According to Bolton News, the fraud unit of the Driving Standards Agency is assessing five rogue tutors it believes may not be legally offering lessons.

Those who have taken classes with the teachers could find that their car insurance policies are compromised if they have not been trained to the official degree.

Michelle Moston, deputy head of the fraud team, remarked that such behaviour "puts all our lives at risk".

"If illegal instructors are on our roads, they have not passed the agency's rigorous three-part test to ensure that they are meeting the highest standards of safety," she said.

British law states that people in the UK can begin taking driving lessons once they turn 17, although discussions have taken place over raising the age to 18.
