11 June 2008 Safety concerns for Yorkshire bikers
A former Scarborough police chief has expressed safety concerns for learner motorcyclists in north Yorkshire as the result of new testing regulationsUnder a new European directive, from September, bikers will have to do a 50km/h stop as part of their tests, equating to 32mph, putting an end to on-road testing, the Yorkshire Post reports.
Former police chief David Short claimed that stressed and inexperienced drivers travelling to tests would be put in a risk situation by having to travel long distances.
Mr Short, now national campaigns manager for the Motorcycle Action Group, said: "The test centres will reduce from 225, including places like Scarborough, York, and Northallerton, to 66 for the whole of the UK. It is a right dog's dinner."
He added that this change will deter people from riding motorbikes which can save fuel and reduce congestion.
Other manoeuvres included in the practical motorcycle driving test include wheeling/standing, U-turn and slow riding.
