The success of the Toyota Prius car will inspire a new generation of hybrid models in the next five years, an industry expert has claimed.

Jay Nagley, publisher of Clean Green Cars, has said that more green cars will emerge onto the market in the coming years.

He commented: "The Prius really is the tip of the iceberg. In four or five years time there will be a new generation of hybrids, which will be much more efficient."

Mr Nagley added that this will have a "major impact" and said he believes there will be many millions of hybrid cars on the roads in five years time.

Last month, Toyota announced that sales of the Prius had topped the one million mark by the end of April.

The company estimated that Prius vehicles had helped to reduce carbon emissions by producing roughly 4.5 million tonnes less than the equivalent petrol-powered cars.
