02 June 2008 Drivers reminded to 'think bike'
Car drivers have been warned that the recent revival of motorcycling should serve as a reminder for them to keep an eye out and make sure they ease the passage of cycles.A new advertising campaign - "Sorry mate I didn't see you" reminds drivers to check carefully at junctions, echoing an earlier campaign urging car owners to "Think once, think twice ... think bike", the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said.
They are urged to check their mirrors for bikes and making space for cyclists that are filtering through traffic if they can do so safely, which could prevent accidents and insurance claims.
"By pulling over slightly, to one side or the other, you can make the difference between letting the biker past, or adding to the congestion," the IAM said.
Drivers trying to make room for bikers are told to always first check their mirrors.
Last week, Only Kent reported that over a million pounds worth of car insurance claims are made every hour in the UK, mainly as a result of driver error.
