30 May 2008 Full-time speed plan rejected in village
Police in Staffordshire have turned down the chance to roll out a speeding initiative full-time in a local village, it has been reported.According to the Burton Mail, a Community Speedwatch programme in Linton and Coton in the last three months resulted in thousands of motorists caught out by members of the public with speed guns.
Those found breaking the limit could find it difficult to pick up car insurance policies in the future, as cover firms could judge them as a road risk.
However, police in the area will not prolong the three-month scheme, much to the disappointment of Parish council chairman Andy Hasell.
"It is a bit of an insult really. Now there are just accidents waiting to happen," said the official.
Meanwhile, the Lancashire Evening Post has stated that £1.7 million was paid out by drivers in Lancashire for speed awareness courses during 2005 and 2006.
