27 May 2008 Lancs drivers 'paid £1.7m in speed courses'

Driving class bill revealed. Motorists attending speed courses in 2005 and 2006 paid £1.7 million in order to do so, according to new statistics.

The Lancashire Evening Post has stated that figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that 19,453 people took the classes during the period.

Indeed, the courses are an alternative to picking up a roads conviction - something which can see motorists compromise their car insurance policies if cover firms view them as a risk.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Drivers (ABD) commented that police officers often punish the wrong road users.

He said: "A lot of accidents that involve speeding also involve drink and drug."

This comes as a spokesperson for the ABD recently slammed plans from the government to increase road tax costs.

According to the Times, the representative remarked that the changes were "a load of cobblers".ADNFCR-682-ID-18610386-ADNFCR
