23 May 2008 Uninsured drivers face crackdown

Police in Hampshire have been cracking down on uninsured motorists by seizing the vehicles of those found driving without appropriate cover.

Officers have confiscated more than 10,000 vehicles belonging to car insurance fraudsters during in the last three years as part of a campaign to tackle illegal motoring.

They were granted additional powers in July 2005 to remove from the roads vehicles belonging to drivers with no licence or insurance.

John Martin, head of the Hampshire Police's contract vehicle recovery scheme, said uninsured drivers cause "distress and misery" for law abiding motorists who see their car insurance premiums rise as a result.

"Those members of society who take a responsible attitude to licensing and insuring their cars will take some pleasure in knowing that the police will actively seek out those who choose not too," he remarked.

Drivers who make an honest effort to ensure they are fully covered should check whether their policy includes trips abroad, especially if they are heading to the continent this bank holiday, as failing to do so could mean they are left unprotected, the financial research firm Defaqto has warned.
