23 May 2008 Britain 'a nation of in-car crooners'

British motorists love to sing along to their favourite tunes whilst out and about on the roads, according to a new survey by elephant.co.uk.

The research found that almost one fifth of UK drivers sing out loud to the songs on their radio or stereo every time they drive.

Its research also reveals that just seven per cent of motorists leave the radio alone, preferring to have peace and quiet in their car.

And when it comes to gender differences, the survey suggests that it is women who give Britain its title as a nation of in-car crooners.

"More than twice as many women than men admit to always singing in their car," said, Brian Martin, managing director of elephant.co.uk.

Of course singing whilst driving can act as a distraction and motorists should take particular care, especially in busy areas and on rural roads, and make sure they have comprehensive car insurance to cover for any accidents.

Financial research firm Defaqto is advising in-car singers exercising their lungs during a road trip to the continent this bank holiday weekend to check whether their car insurance covers them for driving abroad.
