21 May 2008 Range Rover 'to go green'

Green car technology is set to enter the large luxury vehicle market, according to the founder and chief executive officer of Liberty Electric Cars.

Barry Shrier explained that through a £30 million investment, the new firm is set to re-engineer such vehicles and 4x4s in order to make them free of emissions.

Creating an electrically-powered Range Rover is a goal of the initiative, which will use a unique electric drive-train platform.

The Liberty Electric Range Rover, which will cost upwards of £95,000, is expected to appeal to those who want the "comfort and security of a luxury 4 x 4" but in an environmentally-friendly package.

Mr Shrier claimed car insurance customers and other drivers will be offered a clean and quiet driving experience around roads and cities - "free of tax, congestion and parking charges".

He added that the Liberty Electric Range Rover will have less of an environmental impact "than even the smallest, most fuel efficient car".

Car insurance customers and other members of the public interested in advancements in green motoring can visit the Eden Project from May 23rd for a special event.

The Sexy Green Car Show will feature the most environmentally-friendly vehicles until May 31st.
