20 May 2008 Bank holiday weekend boost for drivers

The Highways Agency has announced that almost half of all large scale road works will be completed or suspended ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.

Travellers using England's motorways and congested A roads between 6am on May 23rd and midnight on May 26th will have a smoother passage to their holiday destination.

A total of 35 major road works will be halted during the weekend but a further 44 will remain in place to maintain safety on the roads. The agency claims 17 road improvement projects will be completed before Friday while a further 18 will be temporarily stopped.

Roads Minister Tom Harris said: "The Highways Agency is doing everything it can to help drivers with their bank holiday journeys.

"The roads will be busy, so I urge drivers to plan their journeys using travel information available on websites and radio bulletins, and allow extra time to complete their journey safely."

To avoid breaking down holidaymakers are urged to check tyres, oil and water levels ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.
