20 May 2008 Wireless connections offer potential for 'dynamic' Sat Nav
Advances in wireless technology will make it possible to develop new satellite navigation systems that could "intelligently" help travellers avoid traffic hotspots, according to an expert.Andrew Ferguson of thinkbroadband claims that future navigation tools will be able to access online information via a wireless connection and change a route accordingly.
He said: "In theory any device that exchanges data over a cable can be re-engineered to use a wireless connection.
"Once vehicles have a basic form of interactive wireless connectivity, there is very little to stop navigation systems updating dynamically and perhaps using intelligence to avoid bottle necks."
Telecoms regulator Ofcom recently released a report which suggests that vehicles will instantaneously call emergency services following a crash as a result of wireless connections.
Nearly 32,000 people suffered serious or fatal injuries in the UK during 2006, while the Department of Transports states that there were nearly 240,000 accidents in the same year.
