19 May 2008 Buyers 'baffled' by dealer jargon

The majority of drivers buying new or used cars feel out of their depth when negotiating with a dealer, new research shows.

In a survey by fish4cars seven out of ten motorists said they had bought a car without understanding what the salesman was telling them about the vehicle.

And 55 per cent said they had made a purchase despite not having a full grasp of the functions and specifications of the car or knowing about its history.

It seems the motoring jargon used by dealers is leaving many buyers confused as 57 per cent said they felt ill-equipped to engage in dialogue on the forecourt.

Colin Mathieson, sales director at fish4cars, said consumers should not be afraid to ask questions when choosing a car as a dealer will see this as a sign of an "astute buyer who knows what he or she wants".

The Thrifty Scot advises car hunters to do some research online before heading to a car dealership in order to be prepared when salesperson asks questions about the type of car required.
