19 May 2008 Business drivers urged to cut down on unnecessary journeys

People who drive for business are being urged to cut down on unnecessary journeys in order to save money on petrol and car insurance.

A new survey from Unicom cited by Female First shows that four per cent of business drivers say none of the journeys they make are necessary.

Nine per cent said only one in five of their business-related car trips were essential and 23 per cent said that only four in ten were necessary.

Based on the research Female First calculates that 36 per cent of all car journeys conducted by businessmen and women could be avoided.

Instead a telephone or conference call would suffice, allowing them to save on petrol and keep a lid on their mileage, hence finding cheaper car insurance cover.

Car sharing is another way for business drivers to reduce their motoring bills by travelling to meetings or to and from work in pairs or groups.

National CarShare claims that commuting car journeys could be cut by 20 per cent if all drivers who use their cars to get to work shared a journey with a colleague just once a week.
