16 May 2008 Teenage driver tips offered by motorists group

Learner drivers can be helped by their parents, says group. Teenagers can be helped by their parents in a number of ways when they learn to drive, it has been claimed.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, mums and dads can give their offspring a boost when it comes to developing their skills.

For example, the group has suggested they sit in on lessons, picking up what the instructor does before passing on the knowledge in private lessons.

However, it should be noted that those who do offer personal tutorials could be risking their car insurance policies in the process.

The group commented that the type of car being driven can be problematic for the learner.

"A larger vehicle that has an automatic transmission is of limited use if you know that your youngster will eventually do their test in a manual Micra," the company commented.

Meanwhile, a new Nintendo DS computer game titled Driving Theory Training has been designed to help motorists pass their test.ADNFCR-682-ID-18597669-ADNFCR
