25 April 2008 Official tells motorists to hang up

Motorists in Exeter have been told to hang up their mobile phones when behind the wheel of their car by an MP in the area, a local news source has reported.

The Express & Echo has stated that MP Ben Bradshaw is behind the publication's Hands Off! campaign, which is asking drivers not to use the devices when they are on the road.

According to Mr Bradshaw, who is a keen cyclist, it is vitally important that officers "come down very hard on those who choose to flout the new law".

He said: "We can put a stop to mobile phone use in cars by campaigns, such as the Echo's, drawing attention to the problem."

It may be that those who pick up a conviction on the road find that they invalidate their car insurance policies, as cover firms could view them as a road risk.

Last year, the Department for Transport passed legislation whereby officials can now give a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty to those caught using a mobile at the wheel.ADNFCR-682-ID-18568506-ADNFCR
