24 April 2008 Car insurance 'skipped by hundreds of thousands'
Hundreds of thousands of motorists in the UK chose to travel without a car insurance policy at some point in 2007, new research has found.Statistics from independent price comparison website MoneyExpert.com has found that close to 350,000 motorists took to the road despite not having cover last year.
By law, drivers have to have third party cover at the minimum - ensuring medical costs and personal liability in the event of a serious road accident.
And motorists should not consider cost an adequate excuse for not picking up a policy, said MoneyExpert.com official Sean Gardner.
"It's a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance. They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk," commented the official.
Meanwhile, police in Essex have claimed that a recent spate of registration plate theft is down to criminals looking to skip paying car insurance and road tax, the Essex Echo has reported.
