23 April 2008 Choice given to north-east drivers

Motorists to be given a choice. Drivers in the north-east are to be given the choice of watching a presentation on the dangers of rogue driving or a fixed penalty notice when they are found breaking the law, a local news source has reported.

According to the Darlington and Stockton Times, this comes as part of Operation Siren - a multi-agency initiative designed to cut the number of road deaths in the area.

Those who opt for the fixed penalty notice may find that they pick up more expensive car insurance policies in the future, as cover firms could view their actions as indicative of a dangerous driver.

"I would strongly urge motorists to drive carefully and within the law. It doesn't matter if you are late, your phone-call can wait and remember, that bald tyre you keep ignoring could cost you your life," said Chief Superintendent Sue Cross.

This comes as Department for Transport figures show 3,150 people were killed on roads in the UK during 2006.ADNFCR-682-ID-18563604-ADNFCR
