22 April 2008 Police 'look to catch out Derbyshire speeders'

Police in Derbyshire are targeting speeders. Police officers in Derbyshire are to target those caught above the speed limit as part of a month-long initiative, according to a national news source.

Officials across the region will step up the number of checks they carry out and intend to increase the frequency with which they hand out fixed penalty notices and £60 fines, according to the BBC.

Such a road conviction can have a serious effect on a car insurance policy, as cover firms could judge a driver to be a risk on the road and put up prices as a result.

The faster a motorist travels, the more dangerous they become, according to Chief Inspector Lynn Harris.

She said: "There can be no doubt that exceeding the speed limit or simply driving too fast for the road conditions is a contributory cause of many road collisions."

This comes as the BBC yesterday reported that officials in the Lothians are cracking down on motorists who choose not to wear seatbelts behind the wheel.
