21 April 2008 Initiative sees officers catch out drivers without belts
Police officials in Essex caught out motorists travelling without wearing their seatbelts as part of a crackdown against rogue drivers, according to a local news source. The Essex Echo has stated that people were stopped at the junction of Sutton Road and Southend Road last week, with 60 people caught without the safety harnesses.
Motorists found to be breaking the law in such a manner may find that they invalidate their car or van insurance policies, as cover firms could view them to be a road risk and increase prices.
"If you are involved in a road accident when not wearing seatbelt you have a greater chance of being seriously injured," councillor Norman Hume, Essex Casualty Reduction Board chairman, commented.
Police officials in Scotland are today launching a similar campaign, catching out drivers in Scotland found without seatbelts and breaking the speed limit.
