21 April 2008 'Driving ban after two strikes' for motorists
Motorists in the UK will be caught drink-driving twice before officials can ban them from the road, new government plans outline.According to the proposals, the legal limit before which a driver is seen to be unfit to take to highways is also set to be lowered.
It could be that this has an affect on car insurance policies, as cover firms could increase costs if there is a recorded increase in offences.
Cathy Keeler, head of campaigns for road safety charity Brake, remarked that the proposals are a positive step.
"We will save the most lives by reducing the limit and keeping the automatic ban. We must not distort the simple message that being caught over the limit results in disqualification," she said.
Meanwhile, the Guardian has stated that 170 UK police officers continue to serve despite being caught drink-driving in the last six years.
