21 April 2008 Car accidents 'could be cut with technology'
Motorists in the UK could suffer fewer accidents on the roads due to advances in modern technology, a top vehicle manufacturer asserts.According to Volvo Trucks, drivers could become safer if a greater understanding of motorists' behaviour is incorporated into vehicles, along with user-friendly instrument panels and integrated communications.
The company presented the findings, which could also help people save on their car insurance policies by reducing accidents, to close to 200 researchers from across Europe on April 15th and 16th.
"If we can provide technology that adapts support systems to suit the individual driver and the current traffic situation, many accidents would be able to be avoided," said Volvo Trucks safety director Lars-Goran Loweradler.
Meanwhile, the company has launched a new audio system for vehicles with mp3, wireless Bluetooth and iPod capabilities which, it states are usually found in the market's most exclusive models.
