17 April 2008 Forecourt retailers 'not to blame for high petrol prices'

Petrol prices 'not down to forecourts' The recent increase in the price of petrol should not be blamed on forecourt retailers, according to an industry association.

Motorists are currently paying more for fuel due to investment in the oil market in addition to seasonal demand, the RMI Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) has remarked.

Indeed, the recent increase in costs could be most unwelcome among those already paying high road tax and car insurance bills.

But Ray Holloway from the PRA states that this is not the fault of retailers and that the blame lies elsewhere.

He said: "UK motorists still pay the highest fuel duty in the world. If this were reduced, motorists would immediately pay less for their fuel."

And fuel costs are expected to increase in the future, with the Guardian reporting that petrolprices.com believes prices will hit £1.50 per litre by the end of the year.
