16 April 2008 CCTV to 'catch out litterbug drivers'
Drivers in the UK could soon find that they are sent a fine for littering from their vehicles weeks after the offence. This is because government ministers are considering the nationwide introduction of CCTV in order to catch out those committing the crime.
An £80 fine will be issued to the registered drivers of the vehicle as part of the initiative, with a pilot scheme beginning in London this summer ahead of a possible nationwide rollout.
Such a fine could prove a costly addition alongside road tax and car insurance bills.
"There is no excuse for littering, particularly from cars ... I am always horrified and angry when I see people throw something from a car," waste minister Joan Ruddock told the Daily Mail.
CCTV may also be used as part of a new initiative to monitor school bus trips in Wales, according to the Daily Post.
