14 April 2008 Distracted drivers 'could risk car insurance policies'

Distractions could prove costly for drivers. Motorists who find themselves distracted at the wheel could find that they invalidate their car insurance policies.

A new poll from the Highway Code has found that 65 per cent of people snack while travelling, while 59 per cent of people drink non-alcoholic beverages on the road.

It may be that such behaviour leads drivers to have a crash and results in an increase in car insurance policies as a result.

Further statistics from the study found that 53 per cent of people play loud music in their vehicles while 37 per cent argue with passengers.

Smoking, shouting at misbehaving children and playing with gadgets and toys were also cited as typical road activities.

This comes after legislation passed by the Department for Transport last year which means that those caught using mobile phones behind the wheel can pick up a £60 fine and three points on their licence.
