11 April 2008 Motorists 'more aware of green issues'

Last year saw a rise in sales of used diesel cars. Sales of used diesel cars rose by four per cent last year, new figures show.

Research from Experian also reveals that sales of petrol cars fell by 4.4 per cent in 2007, which the organisation claims is evidence of Britons' growing awareness of the environment.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director of the company's automotive division, says that there has been much media attention given to green issues in recent years.

He points out that forthcoming motor tax and fuel duty increases give motorists yet another reason to buy fuel-efficient cars.

Drivers of such vehicles may also find they are offered cheaper car insurance policies.

"There has been a lot of media attention, not only around the environment and the effect of the most polluting cars, but also on the forthcoming car tax increases and the rise in fuel duty," says Mr Fletcher.

Under new government regulations, a 2p per litre hike in fuel costs is to be implemented from October of this year.
