09 April 2008 FTA calls for greater road maintenance coordination

Greater coordination of roadworks would benefit drivers, claims FTA. Motorists in the UK should be disrupted less by the coordination of maintenance work across roads, it has been claimed.

According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), local authority funding to improve highways should not be used for other activities, Courier Exchange has reported.

Drivers could find themselves having to claim on their car insurance policies if their vehicles become damaged after hitting a hole in the road.

Indeed, the news source added that a recent Asphalt Industry Alliance report has shown that there are over 3.5 million potholes on British highways.

"The government must increase the funding provided to local authorities in order that they are able to maintain their roads in a fit and proper condition," said the FTA's head of urban access policy, Stephen Kelly.

Meanwhile, the Lincolnshire Echo has reported that £4 million more is to be spent resurfacing roads in the region in order to eliminate potholes.
