08 April 2008 New limit 'welcomed by two in five'

Residential speed limit would be welcomed by some drivers. Some two in every five British motorists would welcome a 20mph speed limit on city streets, it has been reported.

According to research from car supermarket firm Motorpoint, 12 million people would like to see the rest of the UK follow the example of Portsmouth - the first authority to apply a city-wide 20mph limit in residential areas.

If the rule was to be adopted across Britain, it may be that car insurance prices drop as a result as cover companies could view the roads as safer.

David Shelton, managing director of Motorpoint, remarked that he did not expect motorists to be so welcoming of the plan.

He said: "We were surprised at the extent to which people seem ready to accept a lower speed limit in residential areas."

Officials will likely be looking to cut the 3,150 deaths on UK roads in 2006 reported by the Department for Transport should the change come in.
