Car insurance 'being helped by internet'. More people were referred to car insurance deals through search engines last year than in 2006, new statistics indicate.

Research from comScore states that there were some 8.9 million quotes generated in such a way in 2007 - an increase of 36 per cent compared to one year previous.

Car and van insurance deals were also investigated once consumers had viewed online advertising from companies, the study adds.

This will prompt firms to explore new ways in which to entice people looking for the best cover company for them, according to Kevin Levitt, comScore vice-president.

"In 2007, more than a quarter of all online auto insurance quotes were referred by a search engine," says the official.

Further research from the digital analyst found that General Motors have started the year as the biggest automotive firm on the internet.

In January, the company had more promotional material online than any other automobile company.
