03 April 2008 Operation to catch phone-using drivers begins

Mobile phone-wielding drivers targeted. Wiltshire police officials have launched a campaign in order to catch out those drivers who persist in using mobile phones behind the wheel, it has been reported.

According to Wiltshire Times, officers in the region do not feel that the problem has been eradicated by increased legislation last year.

In February 2007, the Department for Transport announced that motorists found on the phone behind the wheel receive up a £60 fine and three points on their licences.

Inspector Nick Elton from Wiltshire's Road Policing Unit remarked that reaction times slow when drivers pick up the handset.

He said: "It is vital that people understand that using a handheld mobile phone while driving significantly increases their chance of being involved in a collision."

The official added that car insurance premiums can increase depending on the number of points a driver has on their licence.
