03 April 2008 CCTV to fine motorists "way off"
A time when motorists parked illegally can be fined using CCTV is "way off" according to council officials in Edinburgh, a local news source has claimed. The Edinburgh Evening Times has reported that while authorities in England have the power to punish rogue parkers with such footage, the legislation has not been passed in Scotland.
People caught out could find that they pick up an expensive car insurance policy in the future if cover firms consider them a significant road threat.
But while the system may have worked in London, Edinburgh city development director Andrew Holmes has remarked that it will not be incorporated in the city just yet.
"While this system has been effective in London within the congestion charging cordon, we are still a way off this type of system in Scotland," he said.
New powers given to parking wardens this week mean they can now send fines through the post, meaning motorists who drive away can still be punished.
