02 April 2008 Motorists 'need airbag knowledge'

Airbag knowledge is needed, says group. A road safety group has commented that drivers across the UK need sufficient knowledge of exactly what happens when an airbag is deployed in a vehicle.

GEM Motoring Assist has stated that motorists should be made aware of the inflation process after member Matt Day raised the issue.

He commented that although airbags worked properly for him and his wife, he did not know that smoke usually fills vehicles when the features are deployed, causing him to panic.

Indeed, such a scenario could result in a car insurance policy being further compromised after an accident.

Now a section has been added to the GEM website which explains how the safety features work.

"Airbags are a great addition to the safety equipment of modern cars but like so much involved with modern motoring we have to understand how they work," commented GEM chief executive David Williams.

Meanwhile, the new Toyota Auris is to feature nine air bags in an effort to keep drivers safe, with prices starting at £12,995.
