02 April 2008 Rogue motorists targeted by joint police scheme

Officers have teamed up to ride the road of rogue motorists. Police across the south of England and Wales have teamed up as part of a joint operation to reduce the number of rogue drivers on the road, according to a national news source.

Operation Utah involves 100 officers from constabularies in Devon and Cornwall, Dorset, Thames Valley and Gwent among others, the BBC has reported.

It added that officials used automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) to catch out those without car insurance or road tax, in addition to other highways offences.

Superintendent Tim Swarbick from Devon and Cornwall Police called ANPR an "immensely powerful" tool in the fight against irresponsible motoring.

"It's probably one of the best bits of technology we've had for the past 20 or 30 years," he said.

Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Evening Post has reported that officers in the region have handed out convictions to 1,025 drivers in North Yorkshire since March 18th.
