01 April 2008 Crackdown nets rogue North Yorkshire drivers

Police have cracked down on rogue drivers in North Yorkshire. An initiative to catch out drivers breaking the law across North Yorkshire has seen more than a thousand people punished, it has been reported.

The Yorkshire Evening Post commented that some 1,100 vehicles were stopped by officials with 1,025 picking up convictions since March 18th.

People found violating the law in such a fashion may find that they also compromise their car insurance policies, as firms may judge them to be a risk on the road.

According to Chief Superintendent Sue Cross, the crackdown comes after last year's number of deaths and serious injuries was "totally unacceptable".

"There were 81 people killed and 731 seriously injured on our roads last year ... Every one of those deaths was a son or daughter, husband or wife, mother or father," said the official.

Work to upgrade the A1 in North Yorkshire to a three-lane motorway is set to begin this autumn, according to the Northern Echo.
