31 March 2008 Official backs drink-drive limit cut
Plans to cut the drink-drive limit on roads across the UK have been backed by an official, according to a news source in Scotland. The new rules would see motorists stand to be punished for drinking a small glass of wine and getting behind the wheel, according to Scotland on Sunday.
It may be that the change results in up to 200,000 motorists losing their licence each year, the news source added.
This could prove to be a problem for those looking to keep their car insurance no claims bonus intact, as a conviction on the road could see them invalidated.
But such a move will change the way motorists approach alcohol, said Rob Gifford from the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety.
"Lowering the limit may not affect those who are two or three times over the limit, but it will have a sobering effect on those at or just over the current limit," commented the official.
The UK's current drink-driving limit is 0.8mg alcohol per 100ml blood.
