28 March 2008 Avon and Somerset officers target speeders

Somerset officers have clamped down on speeders. Police officers in Avon and Somerset have cracked down on motorists in the region travelling over the speed limit, it has been reported.

According to the area's constabulary, more than 80 vehicles were found breaking the law in such a manner on Wednesday.

Those who are caught out can pick up a fixed penalty notice as well as licence points, while they may also invalidate their car insurance policies if cover firms consider them a road risk.

PC Nick Butler, who co-ordinated the event across Wrington, Yatton, Clevedon and Kingston Seymour, commented that reducing speed can also cut collisions.

"We believe the day was highly successful and think that motorists have taken on board the importance of adhering to the speed limits," said the official.

This comes as Ingrid Tarrant, the estranged wife of television personality Chris Tarrant, has avoided a driving ban after she was found speeding.

Ms Tarrant was caught travelling at more than 60mph in September last year.
