27 March 2008 Speed cameras 'no longer driver enemy'

Drivers may be warming to speed cameras. Motorists in the UK are learning to love speed cameras more than they have done in the past, according to new research.

Statistics from IAM Motoring Trust show that 20 per cent of people live in households where someone has been caught out by the devices so far this year, compared to 28 per cent last year.

Picking up a conviction due to a camera can have an affect on car insurance policies, as cover firms could increase the cost of a policy if they consider a driver to be a road risk.

Attitudes towards cameras have also shifted, with 39 per cent claiming that they do not believe that money is the primary motive behind the machinery - compared to 36 per cent in 2007.

"Hopefully, [the drop in people caught] is because more believe that safety cameras save lives, but it could be to do with motorists becoming more aware of where cameras are sited," said IAM Trust head of road safety Kevin Delaney.

Meanwhile, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press has reported that more cameras may be erected in Norfolk in order to reduce crashes on country roads.
