25 March 2008 Advanced driving lessons 'could reduce young driver accidents'

Extra driving lessons could be on the menu for young motorists. Young motorists in the UK may find that they are less susceptible to accidents on the road if they take advanced driving lessons, it has been claimed.

According to Bolton News, officials from the Bolton Institute of Advanced Motorists are to visit sixth-form colleges in the area in order to educate those new to the road.

The extra lessons could help prepare drivers for scenarios not covered in traditional classes, such as motorways and country roads, according to the group's publicity officer Katherine Whittle.

She said: "They do not know how to negotiate bends properly and could be encouraged to go faster by passengers and the result can be disastrous."

It may also be that a drop in the number of collisions sees the cost of car insurance fall, as cover firms could see them as a less of a potential threat.

Department for Transport statistics show that some 3,150 people were killed on UK roads over the course of 2006.
