19 March 2008 Cameras 'earned £100m in 2006-07'

Speed cameras 'make £100m plus' Speed cameras installed on roads across the UK made more than £100 million (m) over the course of 2006 and 2007, new statistics show.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has released the figures, claiming that operating costs account for nearly all of the money made.

Any leftover profit is then split between the 38 safety camera partnerships in England and Wales, the body added.

Those caught on camera exceeding the speed limit can pick up a motoring conviction which can have a serious effect on a car insurance policy should cover firms view drivers to be a risk and increase costs.

But a DfT spokeswoman added that statistics prove that the devices do improve road safety.

"Independent research has shown there are 1,745 fewer deaths and serious injuries at camera sites each year," she said.

Two new speed cameras are to be put up on the A435 Alcester Road in Studley, the Redditch Advertiser has reported.
