19 March 2008 'Dorset drivers' poor driving cause crashes'
The main factor in vehicle collisions in Dorset is poor motoring, according to new research.A report prepared for Dorset County Council shows that more than three-quarters of the 2,554 crashes in the region over a 23-month period were caused by bad driving, the Dorset Echo has stated.
Poor reactions to other motorists, breaking the speed limit and driving too close to other vehicles were all termed as bad behaviour in the report, the news source added.
But Miles Butler from the local council did not dismiss the part played by hazardous highways across the region.
Indeed, poor road conditions can also see motorists claiming on their car insurance policies should their vehicle become damaged.
"The road environment is very often not the factor in an accident - it's much more likely to be driver error or poor judgement … That is not to say we don't need to get the roads in order," he said.
Nationwide, there were some 3,150 people killed in vehicle collisions in 2006, the Department for Transport has reported.
