18 March 2008 Drop-off charge for Heathrow drivers

New charges at Heathrow? Motorists may soon be charged to drop people off at Heathrow airport under new plans, it has been reported.

According to the Evening Standard, a report from BAA has shown that the body is looking to introduce a £20 charge for those taking passengers to the hub.

This will be charged in addition to the £20 daily parking fee and any additional car insurance bills motorists could have.

Pollution and air quality problems have been cited as areas which could be improved once the extra money comes in, estimated to total £137 million, rolls in, the news source added.

"This report suggests BAA could be rewarded by making huge sums of money out of environmental problems created if the expansion of Heathrow goes ahead - a sort of eco-profiteering," remarked Justine Greening, MP for Putney.

This comes as the site will next week open its fifth terminal, reportedly worth £80 million.
