18 March 2008 Drop in notices issued on 'Scotland's most ticketed street'

Parking tickets are down on one Scottish street. There has been a drop in the number of parking notices issued on Scotland's most ticketed street, according to a local news source.

Figures released under the freedom of information act show that 4,000 fewer fixed penalty notices were given to rogue drivers on George Street in Edinburgh over the last two years, the Edinburgh Evening News has reported.

This may have resulted in cheaper car insurance policies for some people, as cover firms sometimes choose to keep costs low for those who stay out of trouble with the police.

But Nigel Duncan, Federation of Small Businesses in Edinburgh chairman, claimed that the risk of a ticket is keeping people away from the city centre.

"The constraints put on motorists coming in to the city centre ... means most people are shopping at centres on the periphery because they are easier to get to and they can park their car," said the official.

New powers given to parking wardens from Monday March 31st mean that two levels of fines can be handed out by officials, based on the severity of the offence.
