17 March 2008 Motorists 'require break every 80 minutes'
Drivers who do not take a break from travelling every 80 minutes may be risking their lives, according to new research.New Scientist show that reaction times can be seriously affected when drivers do not relent for more than this amount of time.
The study, conducted at the National Central University in Taiwan and published in Physiology & Behaviour, saw motorists aged between 26 and 30 tested as to how quickly they could react to a red symbol as they drove.
It found that reaction times were around 0.3 seconds longer approximately 80 minutes into their journey.
Those who do take regular breaks may find that they stand less chance of being involved in an accident and invalidating their car insurance policies.
Indeed, some firms could increase costs if they believe a driver is a risk to cover.
Road safety charity Brake states that driver tiredness is one of the biggest killers on highways, claiming that around 300 people per year die due to this factor.
