17 March 2008 New system 'lets parents watch driving children'

Learners could be watched by parents with new technology. Parents across the UK could soon find themselves able to keep track of their children on the road when they start to drive, it has been reported.

Safety Center, a new device developed by US company GreenRoad, uses satellite technology to relay messages to the internet, according to Times Online.

Parents can then log onto a site and watch their children drive, the news source added.

It may be that this helps drivers save on their car insurance policies, as people could drive safer and reduce the threat of accidents.

Staffordshire County Council has announced that it will be trialling the device across the region.

"The aim of this trial is not to spy on young people then punish them, but to highlight where they are going wrong so they can change their behaviour and avoid accidents," commented head of road safety Adrian Hide.

By law, teenagers are currently allowed to take to the road once they reach the age of 17.
