17 March 2008 New initiative to get drivers on the bikes
Motorists in London are to be given an incentive by officials in the city to give up their cars and use their bikes instead, according to a local news source. The Worthing Herald states that council officials in Islington are offering people in the area £200 worth of vouchers if they give up their vehicles and opt to pedal around instead.
The vouchers can be used to buy a new bike or take membership of a local car club, according to the news provider.
It may be that by using their cars less, people find that the costs of their car insurance policies go down as there is less risk of an accident.
Measures to cut down the number of people using the road formed part of Alistair Darling's first Budget address last week.
The chancellor increased fuel duty in addition to upping tax for people travelling in vehicles emitting a high amount of carbon dioxide.
