12 March 2008 Official argues against fuel duty increase

Fuel duty increase contested. Increasing fuel duty by two pence in the litre is not a justifiable move, a petrol official has claimed.

Plans to introduce the rise were set in motion in last year's Budget but Ray Holloway, RMI Petrol Retailers Association director, believes the UK's economic situation has since changed.

Mr Holloway commented that he believes the planned April 1st increase should be scrapped or postponed until the autumn in order to allow for price hikes over the summer.

It may be that motorists in the UK welcome a delay, as an increase could see them struggle to pay car insurance policy and road tax bills.

"The increased tax revenue from current high fuel prices means that there is no justification for the two pence per litre fuel tax increase, and this must now be cancelled or postponed by the chancellor," said Mr Holloway.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling will later on today deliver his first Budget.
