11 March 2008 Mobile users targeted by Lancashire police

Lancashire drivers are being watched over mobile phone use Police officers in Lancashire clamped down on motorists using their mobile phones behind the wheel yesterday, it has been reported.

Blackburn Citizen commented that officials caught drivers out along Bolton Road in Blackburn in a two-hour operation beginning at 10:00 GMT.

People who are found to be breaking the law in such a manner stand to pick up a £60 fixed penalty notice and three points on their licence as per Department for Transport legislation introduced last year.

This can have far-reaching effects on a car insurance policy, as cover firms could decide that offending drivers are a risk on the road and as such choose not to offer them cheap deals.

Police Constable Phil Hambley commented that those caught out did not contest the convictions.

"There were no arguments ... They pretty much accepted they were in the wrong," remarked the official.
