10 March 2008 Motorists targeted in York roadside clampdown
People behind the wheel of unroadworthy automobiles are to be targeted by police in York, a local news source has reported.York Press has commented that the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency is to team up with City of York Council in order to conduct roadside checks on automobiles which appear to be damaged in some way.
According to Tom Foxton, road safety project officer at City of York Council, it is not uncommon for people without car insurance to be driving unsafe vehicles.
He said: "It is estimated that uninsured drivers are ten times more likely to have convictions for drink-driving and are six times more likely to be behind the wheel of an unroadworthy vehicle."
The news source added that a similar crackdown over 2006 and 2007 found two-thirds of cars in the area to be defective, while Department for Transport figures show that there were 3,150 people killed on UK roads in 2006.
